The first importation of Angus cattle into South Africa was in 1895, when ten Aberdeen-Angus cattle arrived on the farm of Mr Charles Newberry in the Free State. This Angus breed is known for their quality meat, unsurpassed fertility and relatively low maintenance. Bona Bona Angus Stud took great care to acquire some of the best stud genetics in the building of their herd.
Mj Ernst was overwhelmed during the 2016 North West club auction, held in Lichtenburg by NoordKaap Vryburg livestock auctioneers, when his bull number 1307 reached the highest price of R 52 000. The bull was sold to Willem Grobbelaar from Ottosdal. The average price of bulls at this auction was R 24 600.
This magnificent bull speaks of the result of thorough breeding with sound genetics. Bull 1307 was born on 25 December 2013 and bred at Bona Bona Angus Stud. Close monitoring of his performance from a young age, indicated that this prestigious animal would perform above average. The sire of this record breaking bull namely Mequatling Fresh, was bought in 2012 on the annual Mequatling production auction. His dam, JMS 06287, was acquired from Angus Alliance, also in 2012. MJ Ernst is of opinion that this bull performed so well on auction due to the balance between his strong physical characteristics and exceptional reproduction values. Bona Bona is proud to be a member of the SA Angus Society and would like to congratulate Mr Willem Grobbelaar from Ottosdal with the solid investment he made in acquiring top genetics from Bona Bona Angus Stud.
